State University of New York at Buffalo
Residency Program in Emergency Medicine

Message from the Chair - G. Richard Braen, MD

G. Richard Braen, MDIn 1989, the Department of Emergency Medicine of SUNY at Buffalo was founded. From a core of two faculty members, we have grown to a large, diverse, multi-talented faculty that is published widely and has won numerous teaching awards. Our attending physicians are graduates of many programs from across the country. Our residents and students are exposed to different approaches to patient care while at the same time given a superb clinical and didactic education. Our Residency Director, Dr. Richard Krause, is a strong program leader and coordinator; he works hard with each resident to maximize their education.

When last reviewed in 2005, the program received Full Accreditation for five years from the Residency Review Committee for Emergency Medicine. It is a tribute to our faculty that UB medical students almost always get their first choice when matching for Emergency Medicine. It has been said that our department does more for the medical students than the other departments. It is a primary focus that our residents are proficient in bedside ultrasonography, emergency airway procedures, telemedicine, research, and exercise stress testing along with all of the "basic" skills needed for the practice of emergency medicine.

You will also find Buffalo to have great professional sports, great theater, great restaurants, and, above all, great people. Buffalo has a lot to offer!

I look forward to meeting you when you come to interview.

Sincerely,

G. Richard Braen, MD
