Sean Bouvet, MD |
Birthplace: Los Angeles, California
College: California State University, Los Angeles
Medical School: Georgetown University School of Medicine
Medical/Research Interests: Pediatric emergency medicine, ultrasound
Scholarly Research Track: Ultrasound
Personal Interests: Dodger Blue, mountain biking, travel, Chihuahua training (don't ask)
About the Residency: We have a unique clinical experience at the University at Buffalo, rotating through many different environments and learning how emergency medicine is practiced in the "real world." In addition to being at large tertiary care Level I trauma centers (Erie County Medical Center, Buffalo General Hospital, and Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo), we also rotate through Millard Fillmore Suburban, and a small community hospital in Dunkirk, New York. The sum total of these experiences is that we are very comfortable in many different environments. At the end of the day, the decision to get a job, go academic, or whatever else you decide, is based upon actual experience - plus you never get tired of being at only one hospital.
About Buffalo: This is a great place to be a resident! It is very affordable - many residents own their own homes. It's easy to get around, there are excellent outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, and enough night life to keep you interested - good bar scene, decent restaurants, underrated music scene, plenty of art (Albright-Knox is a first class gallery). Centrally located to Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Toronto, if you are inclined to go to a bigger city to see Pearl Jam (ask Ryan), or just a 45 minute plane ride to JFK, if you want to go to THE City...

Waseya Cornell, MD |
Birthplace: Lansing, Michigan
College: Michigan State University
Medical School: Michigan State University College of Human Medicine
Medical/Research Interests: Renewed interest in public health, a new interest in EMS through my experience in residency, women's health
Scholarly Research Track: Public Health
Personal Interests: Theater and the arts, traveling, design, fashion
About the Residency: I wanted to be prepared by a residency program to work in any environment I may later choose. We have all types of environments here in Buffalo: from the trauma/inner city feel of the Erie County Medical Center, the acute medical issues Buffalo General, rural medicine at Brooks Hospital, suburbs experience at Millard Fillmore Suburban, to the specialty of Women & Children's Hospital. The areas of expertise in telemedicine, ultrasound, and EMS, among others, make the experience even more diverse. This is a dynamic program that not only hears its residents' concerns, but expediently works to implement changes based on those concerns. This program is full of good people who care about the residents' well-being, both in and out of the hospital.
About Buffalo: Buffalo has been a pleasant surprise! There is more to see and do here than I have had time for. I have enjoyed the restaurants, theaters, galleries, festivals, and parks. There is a wonderful sense of community here, amazing people, and, a unique variety of things to do.

College: Cornell University
Medical School: SUNY at Buffalo
Medical/Research Interests: Emergency medicine
Scholarly Research Track: Administrative
Personal Interests: Windsurfing, rock and roll -- check out my band, THE WAVES, at www.artistlaunch.com/thewaves, football (European kind), running, cycling
About the Residency: Strong clinically
About Buffalo: This is the sixth windiest city in the country and Lake Erie is perfectly oriented for the prevailing winds. I have windsurfed in many places and this is my favorite. There are loads of launch sites for all wind directions. Conditions include: open water big swell (10 feet) - the Canadian Nationals were held near here a few years ago, river sailing - just like the Gorge, and total flat water in high winds - perfect for speed sailing and smoother than Hatteras. The Canadian beaches are beautiful and just 11 minutes from most of the hospitals. The local music scene is great, with big acts available in Toronto. If you are moving here, live in the Elmwood strip.

Birthplace: Pueblo, Colorado
College: University of New Mexico
Medical School: Kansas City University of Medicine & Biosciences
Medical/Research Interests: Public health, women's health, EMS, international medicine
Scholarly Research Track: Public Health
Personal Interests: Photography, art, travel, anything outdoors - hiking, skiing, mountain biking
About the Residency: I have been impressed by the overall warmth and dedication of the program as a whole. There are so many terrific people, from residents to faculty and staff, which help provide both a solid educational foundation as well as a comfortable and fun learning environment. There are diverse educational experiences that add to the overall strength of the program, such as differing emergency department experiences (Level I trauma center to community hospitals), which provides a broad spectrum of patient populations. There is also ultrasound and telemedicine training as well as separate pediatric training at the children’s hospital.
About Buffalo: I was pleasantly surprised by all Buffalo has to offer. There are plenty of diverse restaurants and cultural activities, including theater and art. There are also many outdoor opportunities, such as hiking, skiing, biking, etc. There is also easy access to larger cities. For example, Toronto is only 1.5 hrs away. The weather is a common concern, but has been much better than I expected.

College: University of Georgia, Northeastern University, Boston University
Medical School: New England College of Osteopathic Medicine
Medical/Research Interests: Trauma
Scholarly Research Track: Academic
Personal Interests: Spending time with family, traveling, cooking, movies
About the Residency: This is a fantastic group of fellow interns and residents! We work well as a team and have a good time. The attendings are very approachable, supportive of the residents, and willing to teach. With a Level I trauma center, a dedicated children's hospital, and several suburban hospitals, we get a diverse training opportunity. There are plenty of research opportunities as well. There is time to enjoy life outside of work too.
About Buffalo: It is very surprising! The area has a lot to offer and is very affordable. There is Toronto and Niagara Falls nearby, many lakes, good restaurants, very friendly people, and best of all, no traffic! You can get to work at most of our hospitals within 10-20 minutes. Winter is cold but spring, summer, and fall are great here! I like it here very much.

Birthplace: Amsterdam, Netherlands
College: Duke University
Medical School: University of Missouri-Columbia
Medical/Research Interests: Pediatric Emergency Medicine, EMS
Scholarly Research Track: EMS
Personal Interests: Skiing, scuba diving, cooking, photography
About the Residency: There are many unique opportunities here:
1. SMART Team - drive an SUV wtih lights and sirens to school bus accidents, breaking all traffic laws and hunt fugitives with the Erie County Sheriff's SWAT team (they have big guns and cool toys).
2. Mercy Flight (air medical transport) - fly in the helicopter with a flight medic and pilot (you are the "flight nurse").
3. Multiple emergency department training sites - you will not get bored, but may show up for a shift at the wrong hospital (it happens to most of us at least once during residency).
4. Great group of residents who are usually very happy with the residency program.
5. The program director listens to our concerns (complaints, moans, and groans) and actually makes changes that correct the problems and benefit the residents.
About Buffalo: Other than the October 2006 winter storm that knocked out power and dropped 1-2 feet of snow, the winters have not been that bad since I came here for residency. The cost of living is low (I bought a condo overlooking the lake that I can barely afford, but I can sit on the balcony and watch the sunset over Canada). The airport is only 15-20 minutes from downtown, just in case you have the urge to fly to the Caribbean. The people are also very friendly here.

Medical/Research Interests: Airway management, electrolyte/acid/base disorders
Scholarly Research Track: EMS
Personal Interests: Mountain/road biking, hockey, backpacking
About the Residency: There is a tremendous diversity of patients and pathology, very knowledgeable and approachable attending support, and great subspecialty services which aid in learning but do not dictate management.
About Buffalo: This is an incredibly friendly place to live, and an easy place to live as a resident. The summer weather is terrific, and the winters are overpublicized. It may sound insignificant, but the grocery stores offer fantastic produce, meat and prepared food - you do not realize the value until you experience it.

College: Houghton College
Medical School: SUNY at Buffalo
Medical/Research Interests: Public health, smoking cessation, telemedicine, point-of-care bedside testing, EMS/public education
Scholarly Research Track: Public Health
Personal Interests: Music (I am a professional musician), watching football, hiking, bicycling, theology, spending time with family
About the Residency: This is an outstanding program with great faculty, a strong reputation, and several notable accomplishments in emergency medicine. One of the unique features of the program is the opportunity to rotate throughout diverse hospital settings: from the regional trauma center, to a children's hospital, two community hospitals, and an inner-city tertiary care center. The support staff in our department is outstanding, and the nurses are among the best in the city.
About Buffalo: Buffalo is a terrific city! The population is quite culturally diverse (we have the highest percentage of incoming foreign refugees in the state), the city has great seasonal festivals, and a rich architectural history. Sports fans can enjoy NHL and NFL teams along with many other sporting events throughout the year. Buffalo can boast a great outdoor summer concert series as well as a world-class philharmonic orchestra. Let's not forget the snow - we have four distinct seasons which allow year-round activities.

College: Canisius College
Medical School: SUNY at Buffalo
Medical/Research Interests: Pain management, pediatric emergency medicine, critical care medicine
Scholarly Research Track: Ultrasound
Personal Interests: Day trading, travel, marathon running, family, astrophotography
About the Residency: I know it sounds like a cliche, but this program really does care about you and your education as a resident. Problems with off-service months are dealt with immediately AND to the satisfaction of the residents. Training at several different sites increases our exposure tremendously. We are respected in our service months as the "go to person" when a patient is in distress.
About Buffalo: I have lived here all of my life. There is more to do here than you would think, especially with the winters (which are not as bad as you see on TV) and the waterfront. Plus, there is little to no traffic - you can be anywhere in 20 minutes.
