How did you hear about our residency program?
About the Residency: Great place for training, so far very satisfied with the program. It is an amazing opportunity to be trained in all types of Emergency Departments (Trauma Center, Pediatric Hospital, Suburban Hospital, Rural Hospital, and Academic Center).
About Buffalo: Buffalo is a nice city, do not be fooled by what others say. Housing is very affordable; you can easily buy your own home or pay a very cheap rent. There are many festivals or special celebrations every season, and lots of cultural activities to attend. There are many nice restaurants, ski resorts just 30 minutes from downtown, wineries just a couple of hours away, and lots of other outdoor activities in state parks surrounding the city. If you are looking for extra excitement, Toronto is just 90 minutes away.

How did you hear about our residency program?
I was originally attracted to the program by its strong EMS opportunities and fellowship. I did a clinical rotation here as a visiting student in my 4th year...and the rest is history
About the Residency:
Working in 5 different sites provides us with a variety of different opportunities. Unlike some other residencies, the residents actually like each other. My class hangs out together, and our wives and girlfriends have become good friends.
About Buffalo:
My girlfriend and I were able to buy ourselves our own slice of the American dream: a home in the suburbs with a picket fence and a dog. Buffalo has no shortage of great restaurants, Buffalo Sabres hockey fans, and of course, snow!

Honors: Louis A. and Ruth Siegel Award for Teaching Excellence

About the Residency: The volume and range of pathology is excellent in our training for Medicine and Trauma. While interviewing, I was especially attracted to the program for the scholarly tracks. The tracks especially give you a chance to focus your research interests and get involved with the Buffalo community.
About Buffalo: My wife and I have actually enjoyed many outdoor activities around Buffalo like biking, kayaking, and camping. The Finger Lakes and the Adirondacks have been great to explore. There are also plenty of festivals throughout the spring, summer, and fall. There is great snow skiing in the winter as well. Buffalo is very affordable.

Research Projects:
1) Pediatric Emergency Care Project (PECP) - organizing pediatric resuscitation practice sessions and developing a curriculum of directed readings focused on each session topic. Read more

2) Buffalo Surviving Sepsis Initiative (BSSI) - The Buffalo Surviving Sepsis Initiative is a coordinated interdisciplinary effort to develop a protocol to start early goal-directed therapy in the BGH and ECMC Emergency Departments for patients diagnosed with sepsis and ensure continuity of critical care into the Intensive Care Unit. The initiative also works to educate the Buffalo medical community on early recognition and treatment of sepsis and encourages interdepartmental collaboration to perform quality assessment research.

3) Refugee Health - Directed readings and activities with Buffalo-area refugee services guided by Dr. Billittier, Erie County Commissioner of Health.

How did you hear about our residency program?
From a Buffalo native who I graduated with from Temple University
About the Residency:
One of the strongest features of this program is the variety of experiences residents are exposed to. We spend time rotating through rural, suburban, and urban emergency rooms as well as an independent children's hospital. Instruction in ultrasound is also very strong and is taught by Dr. Jehle, who literally wrote the book on emergency ultrasound.
About Buffalo:
Your paycheck will go farther in Buffalo than just about any other large city. I purchased a well kept, three bedroom house in a great neighborhood with a large backyard.

Scholarly Research Track: EMS
Personal Interests: Firefighting, EMS, outdoor sports, music, cars/racing
How did you hear about our residency program?
I was initially introduced to the SUNY at Buffalo program by a fellow classmate and friend. As a result, I went on a 4th year rotation in the Emergency Department.
About the Residency: The program exposes residents to a diverse population of patients and pathology. We rotate through multiple medical centers (5), ranging from a small rural hospital to a Level I tertiary trauma center.  Residents will experience the full spectrum of trauma throughout the year; from blunt to penetrating, adult to pediatric. Our program offers exceptional training in Ultrasound and EMS, with fellowships available in both specialties. In addition, with the development of the Scholarly Research Tracks, we are able to get involved with the numerous subspecialties of emergency medicine during our three years as residents. Emergency Medicine residents are a well respected part of the SUNY at Buffalo medical team. We have proven ourselves to be strong workers, with attention to the patients and team members. As a result, we have a great opportunity to learn a variety of procedures from the specialties in which we rotate, each relevant to the complete practice of Emergency Medicine.
About Buffalo: The city of Buffalo has much more to offer than the mythical mountains of snow many of us have been told about. In reality, being a native of Northeast Ohio, the snow isn’t bad at all. There are a number of different communities to chose from, ranging from Downtown Elmwood to the endless blocks of suburbia. There are ample restaurants, bars, and clubs to satisfy the die hard socialite. There are plenty of parks and ample waterfront for the outdoor lover and dog lover as well. Then of course there are the shopping malls and outlets for those rainy days....and don’t forget the Sabres!!

Research Projects:
Assistant Medical Director - Niagara Falls Fire Department, Niagara Falls, NY - assist with organization and training of EMS component of the fire service. The NFFD is a full-time, professional fire service providing first response EMS / rescue with more than 4,000 calls annually

Pediatric Emergency Care Project - organizing pediatric resuscitation practice sessions and developing a curriculum of directed readings focused on each session topic.

About the Residency: EM is about variety and that is what you get at buffalo 5 EDs,  different populations, lots of opportunities to take on projects and academic interests, It is all up to you.
About Buffalo: Moving to Buffalo from New York City was a shock, but the place really grows on you. Buffalo is a very comfortable and lively place. It is the first place I've lived with 4 real seasons, which to me is a lot of fun: boating in summer, golfing/hunting in the fall, skiing in winter, and gardening in the spring. There is more than enough to do in this town.
