Having grown up in a large city, I have been very pleasantly surprised by Buffalo! I chose to live in Buffalo itself and love it. My neighborhood is friendly, filled with great restaurants, bars, venues for live music and art- all within walking distance. Also, my commute to the hospitals is minimal.

About the Residency: This residency program gives you all the opportunity to succeed in Emergency Medicine. Rotating through many different clinical sites such as ECMC (Level I Trauma), BGH (Inner City population), WCHOB (busy pediatric ED with a lot of very sick kids), and Suburban (classic community ED) provide you all of the tools you need to build your skills. I feel absolutely prepared to face any challenge in my future career. Seeing as much pathology as possible is great, but it makes for a miserable 3 years if you don't get along with the people you work with. All of our attendings are extremely intelligent, but more importantly are kind and never condescending. We all get along great as residents; everyone is out to help each other succeed. In the end, it's been a tough 3 years but I am so glad I was able to train at SUNY Buffalo. I wouldn't have changed it for anything!
About Buffalo: Buffalo is an interesting place. It's the second most populous city in New York, and the third poorest city in America. This might seem like a negative thing but in reality the people of Buffalo are in desperate need of healthcare and as an Emergency Medicine Resident you are many of their main source of healthcare. As a result they are very grateful to have you take care of them as a resident. Buffalo's winters get a bad rap, but in reality I have found them to be fairly mild. Yes it is windy and snowy often in the winter, but the temps are fairly mild. Having grown up in Southern California, living in Salt Lake City and Phoenix, I can honestly say that Buffalo has the most beautiful summers of anywhere I have lived. Pleasant temps, never much more than 80, with a constant, cool lake breeze. I am going to miss the summers here for sure.

About the Residency: All of the fellow residents are very eager to help each other out and give advice about ED management, off-service rotations, and the general Buffalo area. From the attendings, I almost always have gotten a good "mini-lecture" on my ED shifts.
About Buffalo: As a native Californian, I appreciate the absence of traffic in Buffalo. The city and surrounding suburbs are full of things to do. Coming to Buffalo at the beginning of summer was great because of the warm weather and festivals - it was a nice way to start residency.

How did you hear about our residency program?
I went to medical school here
About the Residency: This program gives us a wide variety of experiences in different emergency department settings. It makes you a well rounded physician that can take care of anything that rolls through your ED doors. You definitely will know what setting you will want to work in when you're done. The EM residency program is also very responsive to its residents' needs/wants/suggestions. We definitely are well cared for!
About Buffalo:
I'm a lifer! Born, raised, plan to stay in Buffalo to practice. I'm very active in the residency recruitment process because I want to spread my enthusiasm towards the area, and in particular this emergency medicine residency program. I think the area has something to offer everyone. Whether you are like me and enjoy the outdoors and country setting (I live 40 minutes south of the city on a small farm), or city living, you can find it here. Your paycheck will go a lot farther here than just about anywhere else. 20 minutes or less to just about anywhere in the city...theater, dining, professional sports (NHL hockey, NFL football, AAA baseball), shopping, skiing, the list goes on and on.
