About the Residency:
The attendings are great to work with - many teaching moments and guidance. If you need help or advice they are always there to lend a hand.

About Buffalo: The winters are great because I can drive 45 minutes and be on the ski slopes. I can drive 15 minutes and have a great view of the lake. The winters may be cold but the summers are great!

How did you hear about our residency program? From current residents, plus this is my home town

About the Residency: This is a three year EM program with great didactic education and diverse clinical experiences. When choosing a residency it is important to look at your preferences, the training sites and the clinical education; these things are evident when you look through a program's webpage or when you interview. Something very important to me was finding a program where I could get all of those educational components met and where the camaraderie is deeper than the surface, a place where I wanted to work and felt comfortable learning. This is the program for me.

About Buffalo:
I moved in and out of Buffalo twice and returned because I love it here. We get snow, but snow is fun and our four distinct seasons are wonderful. I will continue to call Western New York "home" for a long time to come.

Research Project: Development of an Official Tactical (TEMS) Division of SMART - to establish contracts, SOP's and training of SMART personnel to be integrated with Tactical / SWAT operations in Western New York.

Medical/Research Interests: Administration and Ultrasound are in the forefront but I am still surveying the field to see what else is out there that might peak my interests.
Scholarly Research Track: Ultrasound
Personal Interests: Running, music, learning how to ski; I read a lot (it's like a mental vacation to me), spending time with my wife and two Maine-Coon cats.
How did you hear about our residency program?
I did several rotations in the department, both clinical and research, and had lots of contact through the Medical Student Emergency Medicine Interest Group.

About the Residency:
I believe this residency program unlike any other will prepare you above and beyond. The incredible faculty, the diverse patient population, and the rotations done at different hospitals from a Children's Hospital or a nine bed rural ED to a Level I Trauma Center. This will provide you with the necessary skill set to help you become the best Emergency Medicine Physician possible.

About Buffalo:
For me, this city has become my home away from home; great food, great art, great history. It is easy to get around and has a very low cost of living.

Mentor recommendation

About the Residency: The residency offers wide and deep training experiences in all the primary and subspecialties you need to become an outstanding emergency medicine physician. During your residency you get to manage and care for adult and pediatric patients who are afflicted by trauma, malignancy, autimmune disorders, bizarre genomic syndromes, and much more. The depth and breadth of training will put you above most of your peers.

About Buffalo: Buffalo is exactly the kind of place where you want to learn emergency medicine. It has diverse urban neighborhoods from the violent knife and gun club neighborhoods to the affluent upper class neighborhoods. The cost of living is low, so your money goes further as a resident. There are plenty of arts, clubs, and outdoors activities in the area that allow you to find peace while outside of the hospitals.

Research Project: Centralizing Web-based Content for Public Health Information, Integration and Development of Electronic Health Records, Emergency Ultrasound of the Eye and Orbit.

Medical School: SUNY Upstate Medical University
Medical/Research Interests: EMS
Scholarly Research Track: EMS
Personal Interests: Classical music, knitting
How did you hear about our residency program?
I am from Upstate New York and was looking into nearby programs

About the Residency:
The program at Buffalo was everything I was looking for - training in diverse emergency room settings (urban to rural, as well as a Level I trauma center and pediatric ED), nice people, great teaching, and opportunities to explore specialized interests through the scholarly track program. My particular interest and background is EMS - there is a month-long EMS rotation in which you have the opportunity to learn how to be a doctor in the field with the SMART team - a unique experience I did not find at many other programs, and which can be pursued further in the EMS scholarly track.

About Buffalo:
I am really enjoying the city so far - it's a nice mid-sized city, lots of great architecture and history, active arts scene, close to Toronto and Niagara Falls, and many cheap flights available to other major cities. Lowe cost of living, great people, and there is a Wegmans minutes from where I live.

Research Project: I am working on a local protocol for Firefighter Rehabilitation - in other words, how and when to medically monitor firefighters during events.

How did you hear about our residency program?
A Buffalo native

About the Residency:
The core group of faculty both at ECMC and Buffalo General take full advantage of teaching moments with their varied topics of personal expertise.
You think:

"I want to learn to dispo patients like Dr. Hughes."
"I wish I knew orthopedics/sports medicine like Dr. Suffoletto, a sports medicine fellowship trained ED rockstar ."
"I hope I can keep up on "The Literature" (like this month's journal of ...Stroke...Circulation...EM...Resuscitation) like Dr. Cloud and Dr. Thompson."
"I want to stand back and be cool like ..."
all the seasoned veterans.

We are also taught by group of community physicians on faculty that run the ED at Millard Filmore Gates, a regional stroke center that is pioneering acute stroke imaging and intervention. There are so many top notch voices contributing to our daily training that come together in a perfect cacophony; just like a day in the ED.

About Buffalo: Buffalo has turned out to be a cool (and cheap) to place live. The Elmwood district is pretty damn hip. My girlfriend and I were able to afford to buy a house in a cool, safe neighborhood (ranked a top ten neighborhood in USA) that is only a ten minute drive or a 15-20 minute bike ride to four of the hospitals. We've found lots of places in the city to let our dogs run loose. Our own little Central Park, aka Delaware Park, is an awesome example of urban greenery.  The "Secret Places" book has led us on exciting adventures north and south of the city.  There's a cool bike culture, but not very many bike lanes. We've found plenty of fun live music venues, cool bars, dive bars, local pubs, tiny bistros, and true to the game old world Italian restaurants. And I've found people in my residency class that without a doubt I will be friends with for a very, very long time (forever seems a little cliche).

About the Residency: Could not be happier! Teaching is second-to-none, clinical volume and diversity are outstanding, lots of procedures, great group of residents to work with, and was easily able to find a research project that suited my academic interests. This is a residency program that really cares about our wellness as well as our education.

About Buffalo: Great place to live! Easy to navigate without traffic, very inexpensive to live in with a resident's salary, small town feel with all the big city amenities, and believe it or not, there are 4 seasons!

How did you hear about our residency program?
I scoped it out as a medical student

About the Residency:
This program is very humane. You will graduate feeling totally prepared for anything. Being able to work in a dedicated Peds ER is something I didn't realize was important before starting residency, but is something I am extremely grateful for now.

About Buffalo: Beautiful summers, lots of trees. Affordable living, lots of cool old houses converted into apartments; the house our apartment is in was buit in 1898, has stained glass windows and there's a speakeasy in the basement! Affordable living, good produce - the fantastic Lexington Coop and lots of farmer's markets and CSA's are available. The city is flat and easy for biking; I ride my bike to 3 of our 5 hospitals. Lots and lots and lots of good beer :) Buffalo gets some seriously good live music at cool venues. Thursdays at the Square during the summertime = free concerts. Lance Diamond and the 24 Karat Diamond Band is a long time local legend and a must see - this dude kills it. Bluegrass Thursday at Allen Street Hardware is always a favorite.

How did you hear about our residency program?
I was a medical student at SUNY at Buffalo (Class of 2009) and worked with Dr. Defazio, Dr. Cloud, and Dr. Pierce during my medical school career. They were great mentors and really made me excited to be an EM Physician and train in Buffalo.

About the Residency:
The program has many strengths including the variety of training sites, diverse patient population, and the amazing pathology that is seen in Buffalo. There are plenty of really great medical, trauma, and pediatric cases to be seen in our EDs. I think one of the biggest strengths of our program is the generous, supportive, encouraging, and enthusiastic faculty. I have plenty of friends in other residencies, both EM and not, and I haven't heard of a faculty and program like ours.

About Buffalo: Great hockey town, great restaurants, the night life is fun, and there is always something to do (even in the winter).

Other: I am currently an interpreter for the deaf, working part-time for deaf adult services. I enjoy being involved in the deaf community and have made some great friends as a result.

Of course I love just hanging out with friends and playing with my dog and two cats.
How did you hear about our residency program?
Emergency Medicine mentor and a very lucky listserv

About the Residency: I came to the program after a late intern-year revelation to switch from OB/GYN to EM. As such, I hadn't been exposed during medical school, had not researched the programs extensively, and really had no idea about what I should expect from the specialty or the city of Buffalo. As it turns out, this is a stellar program with a good variety of clinical experiences, a specialized pediatric ER (not to be underemphasized in importance), a busy level 1 trauma center, a major cancer center, and amazingly wonderful people to work with and learn from. On top of that, there is a burgeoning simulation center (google: Behling Simulation Center), which has helped develop a previous interest into a major area of work and research. I thank by blessings every day that I'm here doing what I love with people I enjoy being around.

About Buffalo:
What a surprise Buffalo turned out to be! I'd only passed through Buffalo once before moving here (for wings, of course!) and was surprised at the cultural diversity, the friendliness of the neighborhood, and the long list of FREE spring/summer/fall-time activities: farmers market, free concerts at least twice a week, art festivals, street festivals, food festivals, architecture open-house day, garden walk (this is a city that likes its outdoor festivals!) Additionally, going to an AAA ballgame with friends, football games, sailing, drinking beer on one of the many restaurant patios that line the street, playing frisbee in Delaware Park, going to the art museum or the historical society museum (google: Buffalo as an architectural museum), apple and pumpkin picking in the fall, wine tasting in the west or up in the Niagara wine region, and the list goes on. Admittedly, there's less going on during the winter, but if you're motivated, there's still lots to do: skiing (not the alps, mind you), snowshoeing, sledding, and of course, sitting by the fire with your friends drinking cider. Let's also not forget that Buffalo is about a 2 hour drive from Toronto, described uniformly as "New York City, but cleaner and friendlier", and still close to New England, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, etc.

Research Projects:
1. Medical Student Simulation Training:  Training Efficiency Through Simulation

2. Improving Resident Hand-Off in the ER:
Standardization, Simulation, Implementation and Outcome

3. The Effect of Non-Verbal Cues on Perception of Patient Acuity During Sign-Outs

How did you hear about our residency program?
A friend from Buffalo

About the Residency: I came to interview in Buffalo because of a friend and was immediately impressed.  I couldn't be happier that I am here; the training has pushed me and given me the opportunity to get the exposure and experience to practice anywhere.  The faculty have a diverse background and tremendous depth of knowledge.  There is such a diverse patient population and a wide variety of practice experience from Trauma center to pediatrics to community to rural ED.

About Buffalo: Buffalo is a very livable city. I have been able to find great and cheap eats, good hiking, great music, and a whole bunch of other activities.   It has a small town feel with the opportunities of a big city.  My family and friends that have come to visit have also been surprised by how much Buffalo has to offer - not to mention affordability; the housing options are endless.  The hospitals are all close and I am able to bike to several of them.  I love the architecture of the city - truly one of its highlights.

Research Projects:

1. ProCESS: Protocolized Care for Early Septic Shock

2. The Role of Code Simuation in Residency Training
