Birthplace: Buffalo, New York
College: Georgetown University
Medical School: Georgetown University

Board Certification: American Board of Emergency Medicine, American Board of Internal Medicine

Medical/Research Interests: Quality improvement / medical errors, asthma, observation medicine, acute coronary syndrome, geriatric emergency medicine

Personal Interests: Family, gardening, jogging, piano

About the Residency:
The program provides a wealth of clinical pathology in a variety of practice settings. There are opportunities to develop expertise in diverse areas such as cardiac stress testing, trauma airway, EMS, and bedside ultrasound, etc. that exceed those available in most other programs.

About Buffalo:
Buffalo's geographic setting on the Great Lakes at a major international gateway contributes to the wealth of cultural, recreational, and lifestyle alternatives that help define the areas unique character. After spending many years in the much larger, better known Chicago area, I had some misgivings when I relocated for professional and family reasons. It turned out to be a good decision. Buffalo is a great place to live, work, and raise a family.

Editor's Note:
When I became ill at work, I asked for Dr. Basior. This indicates the very high regard I have for her professional skills. Jeanne is a consummate clinician, a tireless contributor to the residency, and a devoted mother.

Board Certification:

Personal Interests: Traveling, reading, remodeling/restoring my old house

About the Residency:
Having just graduated from this residency and now having the great fortune to be a faculty member of this great program I have experienced both sides. The pathology our residents are exposed to is unmatched across the country. Multiple clinical sites from rural, suburban and a children's hospital to a Level I trauma center and the Gates Vascular Institute, where some of the most innovative, cutting edge medicine and stroke/vascular care is performed. These sites provide an unprecedented depth of training and exposes the residents to any disease process imaginable. The fact that the teaching body consists of esteemed, experienced faculty with incredible breadth of knowledge mixed with recently graduated "new blood" that can still taste residency is an asset that provides several perspectives that are essential in delivering superior residency training. My last residency shift was on a Saturday and my first attending shift was the following Monday. I can say that the transition was fluid and flawless and that the residency program here prepared me for anything and everything. I am extremely proud of my training and know from my fellow co-residents that have had the choice of their jobs all over the country that the training they received is unmatched and prepared them above and beyond.

About Buffalo:
For me, this city has become my home away from home; great food, great art, great history. It is easy to get around and has a very low cost of living.
Did you know that the crash cart was invented in this city at our local Level I trauma center by Anita Dorr, RN, the ED supervisor back in 1967.

Kerry Cassel, MDAssociate Director, Ultrasound Fellowship

Attending Physician, Erie County Medical Center

Birthplace: St. Louis, Missouri

Residency: SUNY at Buffalo - Emergency Medicine 2009
Fellowship: Ultrasound - SUNY at Buffalo, 2009-2010
Board Certification:
American Board of Emergency Medicine

Personal Interests: Running, traveling, and SCUBA diving

About the Residency:
I trained here and now work here as an attending so I have both perspectives on the program. The program here offers a unique opportunity to train at many sites: a trauma/burn center, an inner city hospital, a free standing children's hospital, as well as a few community ED's. I think this type of exposure more than prepares the resident for whatever they plan to do after residency. The attendings are easily approachable and eager to teach.

About Buffalo:
Buffalo has been a great place to live. With the four seasons we enjoy there are plenty of activities to keep occupied; from the ski resorts in winter, to the free summer concerts in summer, it is never difficult to find something to do. The traffic here is minimal and everything is pretty much within a twenty minute drive. Buffalo is also a family friendly town.

About Buffalo:
I'm from California and thus am an expert on this topic.  I love the four seasons.  I love the fact that the cost of living is low.  The people are great - if you turn on your blinker, the person next to you will let you over.  It is different than California, but that isn't a bad thing.

About the Residency: The variety of clinical experience and excellent faculty make the SUNY at Buffalo Program stand out. The faculty enthusiasm for teaching is outstanding. The SUNY at Buffalo Emergency Medicine program has had significant success in getting external grant funding. There are numerous faculty that have had significant national involvement in emergency medicine.

About Buffalo: Buffalo is a great place to live. Western New York is a friendly place with safe neighborhoods and excellent schools. The proximity to Canada gives the region an international flavor. Beaches, lakes and skiing are easily accessible. My family loves it here.

Editor's Note: "Dr. Jehle is one of the original innovators of the concept of bedside sonography by emergency physicians. He is co-author (along with Mike Heller) of 'Ultrasound in Emergency Medicine', the first textbook in the field and more recently the textbook 'Ultrasonography in Trauma: The FAST Exam' that published the ACEP. He authored the first study of the use of ultrasonography in blunt abdominal trauma by emergency physicians and the first emergency medicine study of the use of bedside ultrasound to evaluate abdominal pathology. In addition, he was an author of the first study of oximetry in pre-hospital care and of head cooling in cardiac arrest. Dr. Jehle helped bring the first computer- based LCD presentation to a national emergency medicine meeting. Residents in the program have the opportunity to learn sonography from a pioneer in the field who is also an excellent clinician and an effective leader."

Traffic, crowds or long commutes do not plague daily life.  The restaurants (and bars) are world class and affordable.  Beautiful downtown apartments rent for less than parking spaces in NYC.  The people are friendly and approachable.  It’s a great place to make new friends and enjoy your free time.

Sports teams include Buffalo Bills football, Buffalo Sabres hockey, and Buffalo Bisons baseball.

Yes, it does snow here but the severity of Buffalo's winter weather is greatly exaggerated by The Weather Channel. We experience all four seasons. For much of the year, Buffalo is blessed with a moderate climate.

I love music! I am a professional organist/pianist and singer. When not practicing medicine, I can frequently be found practicing music, attending concerts, or performing. I also love to travel, cook, and read. I have an interest in theology and am very active in my local church as well as in international missions.

About the Residency:
I am a product of this residency, and proud to be a part of the faculty.  A graduate of this residency program will feel comfortable and confident in almost any situation, since our residents manage almost every type of emergency (except perhaps high altitude sickness!) One of the strengths of this program is the opportunity to train in different hospitals with diverse patient populations - from the inner city hospitals to the trauma and pediatric centers, to community hospitals.  We have it all, and we train our residents to be well-rounded emergency physicians.

About Buffalo:
I have grown to love this city.  I have lived within 2 hours of Buffalo my entire life, but since coming here for medical school I have grown in appreciation of what this region has to offer.  I love music, and Buffalo doesn't disappoint!  The philharmonic is world-class, the chamber music and various choirs are superb, and the HSBC arena and Darien Lakes Performing Arts Center are always hosting some of the greatest musicians in the world.  For the sports enthusiast, we have the Bills, Sabres, Bandits, and Bisons to enjoy, and though there may be some "Buffalo curse" on those teams, it is still fun to be a part of a city that sticks behind their home-town teams.  This region is incredible for year-round outdoors activities, and on those days when it is nicer to stay inside, the museums and restaurants are fantastic.
