State University of New York at Buffalo
Residency Program in Emergency Medicine

Medical Student Emergency Medicine
Summer Research Program

The program is directed at students between their first and second year who may be interested in Emergency Medicine and includes participation in clinical research, clinical participation in the ED, and will also include a morning lecture series on research subjects. The program will last 10 consecutive weeks, from approximately late May - beginning of August and will enroll 5-10 students/year. Our department funds the program directly. Student participants will earn a stipend for participating for the whole ten weeks. Our program primarily enrolls SUNY at Buffalo students, however, students from other U.S. schools are welcome to inquire about the program if interested.

Each of the participating students will be assigned to one or more attendings to work on individual projects. Projects may involve library or internet searches, medical records reviews, database reviews, database entry, data collection, administering surveys, writing protocols and writing manuscripts.

The second part of the program will involve working shifts in the ED at ECMC enrolling patients who are eligible for ongoing studies. The summer medical students will work out a schedule to cover the 12mn – 8am shifts, with the added benefit of training in patient contact and participation in clinical work such as suturing.

We will also have a morning lecture series on research subjects. There are approximately 15 lectures of one hour each. The final 2-3 lecture slots are taken up by the students doing presentations on their individual projects in front of their peers and attendings.

Each year, an informational meeting for those interested is scheduled for late March. If you would like to attend the meeting for that year, please send an email of interest beginning in January to Liana Dypka, ldypka@ecmc.edu.
